 I began with thoughts on the Highest form of Giving. I received many responses regarding the two examples of giving to strangers (Paying It Forward). Now, I am back to where my spiritual path began, with prayer (see chapter one in Medicine, Miracles and Manifestations.)

How is prayer most effective? Goal-directed or non goal-directed?

I am reviewing the Spindrift Research and how the result might apply to energy healing.

Also, just what is the "Universal Energy" that we so often speak of? Could it be nothing other than unconditional love?

My brief flirtation with posting parts of the fictional account of Dr. James Brock is over;  it is time to think deeply on healing, giving and universal energy.

 I hope you will stay tuned for more on how healing and giving are sides of the same coin!

 Hello everyone,

It has been a busy time with many people going through illness and dis-ease and Cecelia has brought up an interesting question:

"The difference in praying with "hope" versus praying ‘believing you have received.' "

I have been thinking on this a great deal with the prayer groups on TBD.com and healing groups concerning my friend Martin and others. As part of my investigation of energy healing and universal energy, the matter of healing by prayer has quite naturally slipped in and made its presence felt. I do not feel this was coincidental, but by intention to bring our focus (mine for sure) to what may truly matter.

As many of you know, in the 1980's, a group of 383 (I think it was) cardiac patients in the CCU at San Francisco General Hospital, were divided into groups in a double-blind study of the effects of prayer on healing. That is, nobody knew who was being prayed for and who was not. The results were statistically significant.

In his Foreword to A Journey Into Prayer, Dr. Larry Dossey writes:

"At that time I was extremely skeptical about prayer's benefits . . . and I did not pray for my patients. This study, therefore, caused me great concern. . . What if prayer really did make a difference? Was I negligent in not using it?"

Now the book,  A Journey Into Prayer is about the interesting research of Bruce and John Klingbeil, the father and son team who formed the non-profit "Spindrift Research" organization and began to scientifically study the effects of prayer. In brief, their results showed that when intent was put into the prayer, the results were not as effective as when it was more of a "Thine will be done" approach.

That is, I believe, connected with my initial question in this forum on "The Highest Form Of Giving" in which one man gave a 10% tithe without intention, and a lady gave additional monies but with a good warm-hearted intent. The Jewish Kabbalah would say that the giving without intent is a higher form and in keeping with "Thine will be done."

Now Cecelia has posed a slight variation on this theme and she poses the question, what about believing that you have already received?
Strange, just yesterday, I pulled out an old movie, Leap of Faith (Steve Martin). A statement is made: "Kid, I already know that I have it" as an explanation of how an effective con was being put over on those who want to believe in miracles. The point was in agreement with those who feel that when it comes to illness, sickness and disease, those of faith have this belief: "I know he'll come through." And when they do make it, they feel confident that somehow they made it through it all due to God's will.

I feel that three approaches of looking at the power of prayer are related:

1.) In the case of highest giving without intent

2.) "Thine will be done," type of prayer in which no intent is attached

3.) Knowing that we have already received the benefit (or that we most definitely will)

are more efficacious in healing, and with life's difficulties, than with a goal oriented and intent-based healing. Not that healing by intent or giving with intent and purpose are bad, but just not as effective as non-goal-directed healing.

And that brings me back to the discussion of Reiki vs. Johrei. From my experience, there is an element of intent in Reiki and although effective, Johrei seems to be more powerful as the energy is directed to key points of the body, specific points for various disease states.

As I dig deeper into the effect of prayer on healing, I will hopefully be able to speak with more authority on the subject. For now, I sense that prayer without specific intent or attachment may work best.

I would appreciate any thoughts on this subject.

I read the book Donovan's Paradigm with great interest. It is a fictional account of a female physician who had the brass ovaries to utilize energy healing (Reiki) at a mainstream Western hospital in the face of those who could not understand and accept complementary/ alternative treatment.

It was a great story. Author Lynn Price said that she was amazed that many of her readers were physicians who took time to highlight passages in the book, and to contact her with questions. So the interest is there.

Since Lynn obtained Reiki training through the final Reiki Master level, I decided to do the same thing so that I would understand Reiki and be able utilize it in healing.

I first met Lynn in Orange County, California. Thinking that I would discuss Reiki with her, I downloaded "Reiki Symbols" from an Internet site. I wanted to find out more from her. I was startled and amazed when, as she looked at the printed sheet that I handed her, she said, "Do a favor for me. Destroy this page." She did not elaborate, but clearly my possession of the symbols did not jive with her thoughts on Reiki. At the airport, on the way back to Hilo, I did just that: I ripped the paper in small pieces and left them in the trash.

When I returned home, I contacted Reiki.org (William Rand) and located a course to be taught nearby in Honolulu. I secured a spot and began to read a bit about Reiki.

The "symbols," once thought of as secret, are now considered sacred by Reiki practitioners. The calligraphic symbols came to the founder, Dr. Usui (an honorary doctorate) during a meditative moment on Mt. Kurama (note the parallel here: Okada received a revelation on another Japanese mountain, Nokogiri and both have that "sawtooth" look).

It was a common practice for seekers to meditate on a mountain pilgrimage, visiting the temples and art objects along the way, and hoping for, and expecting a mystical experience. Usui felt the symbols that came to him were connected with the universal energy force and using them would allow connecting with the energy field.

In time, he trained a woman named Mrs. Hawayo Takata who was, for a time, right here in Hilo practicing Reiki.  So bits and pieces that I had heard over the years about a "Japanese housewife" were partially correct!

Takata, born on Kauai, suffered from asthma and gallbladder problems. She traveled to Japan and consulted Dr. Chujiro Hayashi (1878-1940), one of twenty-one Reiki masters trained by Mikao Usui. In less than four months, Mrs. Takata's health was improved by Reiki treatments and she was accepted for training with Dr. Hayashi.

Eventually, Mrs. Takata brought Reiki to Hawaii. The initial charge for Reiki master training was $10,000 US. The thought was that an exorbitant price would keep Reiki and the symbols secret and there would not be a large attraction for people with the wrong motives, jumping on the bandwagon to make a profit by treating with Reiki energy. There are many who trained under this requirement but later realized that it may be better to charge a reasonable feel for training in order to promote Reiki.

There are expenses for those who teach Reiki and I believe the course fees now are indeed quite reasonable compared to the value of the training and the ability to help others.

Ok then, I went to the level I and II course on the island of Oahu. I arrived knowing just a bit about Reiki. At this point I may have read one book on the subject and I wanted to arrive with a vessel to fill and to reach an understanding of Reiki.

Strangely, I learned many things, received the level I and II attunements that allowed me to access three Reiki symbols and to treat clients using Reiki, but as a far as a true understanding of the process, I was far from it. That would have to wait six months (a requirement) minimum before the master level could be entered.

Compared to Johrei, which is mystical in its own right, I found Reiki to be on another level of mysticism, one that makes it very interesting to put into practice.

Rather than jump in with a full-blown description of Reiki, it may be more interesting to describe events as they happen which led me to study Reiki, compare with Johrei and other methods of “energy healing” and eventually, how it provided fodder and a stimulus for my current book project of how various methods of energy healing work and exactly what energy is involved.

In the beginning

Since 1995, I have worked with the Mokichi Okada Association (now known as The Light from the East). On all of the Hawaiian islands, there are MOA clinics and facilities, the largest being on Oahu, the next largest in Hilo. Clinics exist on the mainland such as in West Hollywood, but my participation is now limited to Hilo.

On the first and third Sundays of each month, I am at the clinic where members and visitors experience flower arrangement, the Japanese tea ceremony and Johrei, the medical art of Japan which I have described: the emission of a spiritual light from the hand to heal.

My function is as a clinic doctor, to answer medical questions and to help decide about the “key points” where Johrei should be channeled. However, I spend an equal amount of time, if not more, discussing spiritual matters and Mr. Okada’s philosophy and the method he described for elimination of disease, poverty and conflict. In Medicine, Miracles and Manifestations, the key reason that I still go to the clinic twice/month is explained It is not the stipend which they generously offer, but because I feel that there is a debt I owe to Mokichi Okada as prior to a six-year period of tremendous stress and personal conflicts, I had reached a point he described in his poem, “The Way for Man to Live.” The last stanza goes like this:

Let us have the strength,

To bear with any hardship,

Any mistreatment,

Accepting it with a smile,

Just as though it were nothing.

It took two years from the time I first read this, to the day I felt 100% assured that I had reached it. On that day, I fully understood how to accept it with a smile, just as though it were nothing. Then, on the very same day, the conflict began.

Had I not arrived at this state of mind, I may have been like Michael Douglas in the movie, Falling Down. But I was very fortunate. If you can see why certain events happen and that in each and every one is a learning experience, and through into the mix the fact that you yourself planned for it to happen, what more is there to do but extract the lesson, understand it, and accept it with a smile?

So, performing as the clinic physician, over the years I noticed that on occasion, I would ask a visitor, “How did you hear about Johrei?” and would receive the response, “I practice Reiki which is similar. I thought I would look into Johrei as another method of energy healing.”

In time, when such a person would appear, I began to ask, “What exactly is Reiki?”

For reasons that I did not understand at the time, the response was always vague, something like, “Well, it involves symbols, the use of energy from the hands, and it was started by a Japanese housewife in Honolulu.”

That explanation was interesting, but also, it was enough to turn me off. I had spent years studying the life, times and methods of Okada, his revelations, mystical experiences and the use of light from the hands, and the thought of something new, originating in Honolulu, was not very appealing.

But now, after having completed the Reiki Master level, I realize why the explanation of Reiki was purposefully vague and terse. And even in the beginning of my involvement with Reiki, reading about it on the Internet, I didn’t understand it at all until I took the first levels of Reiki training. Then some things became clear, but nothing striking until William Rand and the Master training.

In part, Reiki was closely involved with my obtaining New Page Books as a publisher for Medicine, Miracles and Manifestations. It began last year with Behler Publications and a woman named Lynn Price, author of an award winning book, Donovan’s Paradigm, a novel about a physician who utilizes the healing method of Reiki in her practice. Lynn is not only an author, but owner of Behler Publications and it appeared more than mere coincidence that her fictional story (Lynn is a Reiki Master also) about blending Eastern and Western Medicine seemed to be a companion to my non-fictional account of the use of Johrei and traditional medicine. What happened was that Behler was not to be the publishing house for my book, but was instrumental in leading me to New Page Books and along the way, Reiki instruction became necessary.

In the next section, I will introduce the principles of Reiki and the astounding possible connections with Johrei as both involved mountain-side revelations. Both involved association with a medical doctor who aided in spreading of the techniques, and both were developed at almost the same time in Japan. Both use a type of spiritual and/or universal energy and both can heal. Giving is key in both and eventually, I will analyze which may involved the “higher form of giving.”
